We then visited Whiteface Mountain, not far from Lake Placid, New York. You can drive the Veterans Memorial Highway, a five-mile stretch up the side of the mountain. To reach the summit, you then hike up a rocky, steep footpath with handrails and stones to navigate. For anyone who doesn’t want the strenuous hike, there is also an elevator to the summit.

A stone castle sits on top of the peak, where on a clear day you have a 360-degree view of the Adirondacks. You can see Lake Placid, Lake Champlain and Vermont. There is a weather station in the stone castle that collects data for meteorologists.
