Mount Greylock, Massachusetts

Mount Greylock, Massachusetts

September 25, 2024

The highest point in Massachusetts at 3,489 feet, Mount Greylock is normally a great place to see an incredible view of at least 90 miles away. We drew the short straw the day we visited, and a heavy fog over the area made our visibility zero.  It was still impressive to hike to the Veterans War Memorial Tower at the peak. Mount Greylock is part of the Taconic Mountains, a separate range from the nearby Berkshires and Green Mountains.

Normally you can see 90 miles in each direction. Today, not a thing!

The Appalachian Trail cuts through the top of Mount Greylock. It was fun to hike a short bit on this famous trail.

Above, a stone marker engraved with an excerpt from writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau’s book, “A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers” published in 1867. Thoreau hiked the area extensively.
