No Boundaries for Books

No Boundaries for Books

A library straddling the international border? A building with two addresses? This one- of-a-kind treasure is the Haskell Free Library and Opera House. The main entrance is in Derby Line, Vermont. It shares the border with Stanstead, Quebec. It was built deliberately on the border to promote community goodwill and serve people in the U.S. and Canada. It opened in 1904 as part library and part opera house.

A thick black line on the floor marks the international border going right through the library. The stage of the opera house and half the seats are in Canada, and the remainder are in the U.S. All visitors must use one entrance on the U.S. side of the building. Canadian visitors are allowed to enter through a special sidewalk route without going through customs, but they must return to Canada using the same route.

The black tape on the floor marks the U.S. and Canadian border. Funny side note: The tape was first placed here by insurance companies after a small fire in one of the building’s closets. The insurance companies (one from the U.S. and one from Canada) were disputing who should pay for the damage.
When the library first opened, patrons were not allowed to browse the shelves. They could only look through wooden blocks designed like books with titles written on the spines. The patron would then give the block to the librarian and ask for the book to be retrieved from the stacks. Books were rare and had to be protected.
Wooden blocks designed to look like books. The customers could only browse these before requesting the actual book from the librarian.
The international border is marked inside the theatre with black tape on the floor. Current plays are still performed here and tickets are available to attend.
