Lady Liberty

Lady Liberty

October 24, 2024 – Our journey through New England takes us to our next stop, the Statue of Liberty. As kids, we learned about this symbol of freedom and democracy that France gave to our country in 1886. Neither of us have ever been able to visit. We decided to take the ferry from Liberty State Park in Jersey City, New Jersey to avoid New York City traffic. It was a great way to visit the statue without the huge crowds.

I never realized how massive Lady Liberty is. Seeing her in person is very moving, and it is very sobering to imagine the immigrant experience.

Sitting on a full scale model of the statue’s giant foot. One toe makes a good seat.

Part of our visit included a tour through the Ellis Island museum. We listened to a self-guided audio tour that illustrated what the immigrants went through as they passed through Ellis Island. 12 million immigrants came through here beginning in 1892 searching for freedom and a better life for themselves and their descendants.

The Great Hall where all the immigrants began their journey towards a new life.
