Coastal Beauty in the Carolinas

Coastal Beauty in the Carolinas

We found sun, sand, rest and relaxation at our next stop, Carolina Beach State Park. Our camper was tucked in a peaceful forest. This park is one of our favorite state parks–it is close to everything in the town of Carolina Beach, yet remains a hidden and quiet oasis.

We were surprised to learn that the park is the native home of the Venus Flytrap. This carnivorous plant gobbles insects when they land on its jaws which lock shut. It looks terrifying up close, but is so tiny it would easily fit in your hand. The park also features some amazing pitcher plants. These are also carnivorous–trapping insects in its “pitcher” then drowning them in nectar.

We enjoyed the beautiful trails at Carolina Beach State Park

The park also features a 50-foot sand dune named Sugarloaf Dune. We hiked the dune trail and learned it used to be a navigational marker for ships. There are 9 miles of trails within the park, and a marina that links to the Intracoastal Waterway. The park is just minutes from the Atlantic beaches.

We drove north about 15 miles to Wilmington. We walked the historic riverfront and toured the quaint streets. It is easy to fall in love with this town and it’s picture-perfect historical homes.

The 2-mile Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River is a MUST in Wilmington
